CARDBOARD CASTLE

A lonely boy living on an island has a house made of washed-up trash and cardboard, when suddenly a storm roles in and scatters his house to the wind. Our hero travels throughout the surrounding islands and collects pieces of his house, making friends with the local animals along the way. Through his journey he learns that even a house of cardboard can become a castle when filled with friends.

CONCEPT

Create a game for the Global Game Jam in 48 hours, using the theme "What home means to you". Our team decided after looking at additional modifiers involving the ocean and pollution to create a collectible game based on a young boy recovering pieces of his cardboard house. He travels from island to island learning how the trash is used and where it can cause damage.

EXECUTION

I think we nailed the overall aesthetic but knowing Unreal Engine 4 better now, I could create a much better design for for the game play, especially on the technical side. The fusion of 2D Characters and 3D Environment is a preferred design choice when I work on game jams as it allows us to work with animators without riggers, as often rigging can be hard to find.
